A lot of responsibility

Tonight the girl visiting from the east coast will come stay with us for two nights so she can meet me and get to see my family. Her name is Macy. Pastor Jeff is emailing with another girl from near Santa Rosa who might visit with a family sometime and then I got another email today from another girl who is interested.

More important is one of my closest online friends wrote me the most beautiful letter I think I ever read and it made me cry. She told me how what I wrote made her look at her life and look and see how she had two lives she was trying to live and that she had her eyes opened by what I wrote. I won't say more than that to respect her privacy. If she wants to post it on the comments here and share it I am okay with it. I have very special feelings for her and I think I can see us being friends in real life for the rest of our lives. I hope so. (-:

I never expected my words here to be so important that they were changing lives for other people but I can see they have. I am really struggling with this because I never saw myself doing anything really important in my life and now it seems like God has plans for me and I feel like Moses saying are you sure you really want me to do this?

Pastor Jeff called me last night and said we have to be very careful about attracting too much attention because too much attention means sooner or later we will have police and social workers coming after us. I have had enough of my life made into Hell by social workers and I think I would not be a good Christian if one of them tried to ruin this family on me when I am happier than I have ever been.

I don't know what to do with all of this but I will pray and think on it I know for a good long time.

Okay and now something happier to write about:

We have had thunder and lightning and the worst was on Wednesday night. I am NOT joking when I say you could go outside at 3am and not need a light! There was so much lightning it was almost bright all the time. We had a tree hit and you can see the burn all the way down the tree into the ground. Christie was out there yesterday and was digging up in the ground and the lightning made like a glass pipe in the ground that she cleaned up and put on her wall! It really looks pretty cool and has a lot of colors and rocks in it.

The chicken coop lost the skylight to the wind when it blew off and Steve is getting me a new one today. The chicks were all inside when the storm hit so they are all okay. They are all growing so fast! We bought another bag of feed for them and I am paying for that with my money so it might end up to cost me $24 each week for feed when they are bigger.

The addition to the house is almost done and I might get to move into my new room next week sometime. Christie is decorating the room for me and says it will be like Extreme Home Makeover and she will make it a surprise for me! I am really looking forward to my own room and especially my own bathroom! YAY!!!

On Sunday we will be having the church meeting at the new place Stevie's fiance bought. I have not been there yet but it is supposed to be a nice house with some land around it he bought from our bank after they foreclosed on it. It is supposed to be really pretty inside and I can't wait to see it!

  3. Megan, you may have to make a decision about continuing your blog is you and the church are worried about privacy. Inviting people who are strangers into your lifestyle is very risky. You're opening a door that might be hard to close. You never know how these visitors are going to react and who's to say that they might try and make trouble for you, your family or the church.

The blog provided you a fair amount of anonimity, however letting people know where you live and giving them an inside look into your life pretty much destroys any obscurity you blog may have provided you.

Just be prepared for consequences, though I hope they never materialize for you.

Who's to say that one of these young women aren't really a journalists who's trying to get a story by pretending to be a prospective wife?

  4. Megan: ALM is right. You must be very careful about befriending beyond the blog. It will not only hurt your own family but the entire church and congrigation as well. Once the wearabouts is known it will end very unhappelly. You have to be very smart and very selective as to who you envite. The others you must advise to search out just as you did to find there own family.

  5. I agree with ALM. Now I'm scared. I don't want anything to happen to all of you! I want to protect you; y'all are my little poly paradise that's in the back of my mind lol.

Uh yeah, the glass lightining thing -- TOTALLY COOL!!! A neighbor of mine has a tree that was struck by lightining...I wonder will I look weird digging under their tree tomorrow... lol

I'm worried about y'all so please you ALL be careful!!

  6. I loved this post. I really hope you will keep writing (your most recent post says you are stopping). Please don't let people upset you. Sometimes people ask silly questions and attack for no real reason. As for writing about Muslims, some Muslims get very upset about people saying things about them, even other Muslims (I'm a convert to Islam) so just take what they said with a grain of salt. Perhaps even ignore the bad comments entirely. You don't have to address everyone, you know?

As for the part about the lightning here: I loved it. A glass pipe with rocks in it? Wow. You must live in a pretty special place.
    :)

I didn't comment on this post before, but a discussion on another blog (polygamy411.com) got me thinking and I remembered you posting about responsibility. The topic was about legalizing polygamy, and I wrote:

'The only way it’s going to happen in a democratic country is if people living in happy polygamous marriages, and people who support them, become very outspoken in promoting such a way of life, and manage to slowly bring about a shift in community attitudes. They’re not outspoken because of the existing laws and widespread public attitudes that would judge them. So it’s a catch 22.'

But… maybe these anonymous blogs, where people can share more openly, could be the impetus for a gradual change in community attitudes?

I see you have over 20 thousand page views. Maybe if you can get that up to 20 million, you're in with a chance of changing the world…

I wholeheartedly agree. Megan, you'd be doing a major disservice to the world if you were to cease writing about your experiences. The only times we ever hear about polygamous families in the media is when the leader of some sex cult is accused of knocking up pre-teens, hoarding fully automatic weapons for the apocalypse and/or commits murder. In other words, we only hear how messed up very specific fringe groups are.

It's very refreshing to get an insider's view of a perfectly functional polygamous family. Your words have definitely inspired me so I hope you continue documenting your story for the world.
